After studying film at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3 and spending time at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angoulême to study comics, Julien Meunier made his first documentary with Dorine Brun, La Cause et l'Usage. The film won the Libraries Award and the Young Jury mention at the Cinéma du Réel festival in 2012. It was released in French cinemas on 5th September of the same year, distributed by Norte.
During this same edition of the festival, Julien also presented his second film, co-directed with Guillaume Massart, Hijacking the Box. He continues to collaborate with Guillaume and together they created the short film The Centre in 2015.
In 2018, he once again teamed up with Dorine Brun to produce Projections, presented at Cinéma du Réel in 2018.
His latest film, In Formation, is co-directed with Sebastien Magnier. It was released in French cinemas in December 2021, distributed by Juste Doc.
Alongside and as an extension of his filmmaking practice, Julien has developed a passion for image education. He regularly collaborates with organisations such as the Cinémathèque Française, Périphérie, Cinémas 93, or the Cinémathèque du documentaire, conducting theoretical or practical workshops in various settings (schools, prisons, professional environments…).
